Our veteran patients that are currently on Hospice enjoy the camaraderie and the bond that only those with military histories share and pay tribute to others who have served our county.  These volunteers may provide social visits, take part in special pinning ceremonies, or interview and document veterans military stories through the veterans history project.  These visits would be made in the patients homes in Mobile County.       

At the end of life, comfort  is one of our top goals in our Hospice organization. If you enjoy creating art work, painting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc. you can help provide comfort to our patients and families! Join us as we come together and create arts and crafts projects together, share fellowship, and hand out these projects once complete to our patients and families. Any items like blankets (or fidget blankets), paintings, any art work or arts & crafts, cards, home/room decor, etc. can be made as we share time together and let our skills and imagination turn into beautiful gifts for our patients! Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are an extension of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mobile, Alabama, a bit of home within the walls of USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital.

The Family Rooms are located on the 3rd and 4th floors in the pediatric tower, and serve as a place of peaceful respite, possess a warm and friendly atmosphere for families to use while remaining merely steps away from their child’s bedside.

Participate in our pop tab program by collecting pull tabs from aluminum cans and donating to Ronald McDonald House. The program raises approximately $3 – $4 thousand dollars each year and goes toward the operating costs of Ronald McDonald House of Mobile. RMHC of Mobile relies upon donations of household items and supplies to provide the comforts of home to our families in our 38 guestroom Home and our two Family Rooms located inside USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital. Your donations help make their stay more comfortable so they can care for their hospitalized child.

Next time you are out shopping for items for your own home, we would be grateful if you picked up a few things for us, too. You can also host a donation drive for “The House That Love Built” and collect wish list items at your office, church, school or with a community group. Volunteers are required to complete a health screening bi-weekly before entering the house for your volunteer shift.

Coming home from the hospital for a freshly prepared meal, made by people who care is a real gift to our families. 

This program is for groups with a maximum of 12 volunteers.  The time commitment is usually 3–4 hours. Please consider breaking large groups into several smaller groups.  Plan to cook for 45-50 people and prepare the meal in our RMHC House kitchen. Food prepared in commercial cooking establishments such as restaurants, catering services or cafeterias and then brought in or delivered is acceptable as well. Be the first person our families meet as they enter "The House that Love Built".

RECEPTIONIST  Monday-Friday  4:30PM-8:00PM  (Hours can be flexible and you can volunteer one day a week or as many as you would like).

Responsibilities to include answering phone calls and directing callers to the correct guest room or staff member, answering the doorbell (our house is under a secure system for entry), checking to make sure that anyone entering our house has the correct wrist band upon entry and if not, directing them to the house manager for information regarding how to become a guest.  Light clerical work during slow periods and assisting staff with small projects such as addressing and mailing envelopes or stuffing our "goodie bags" to be given to our new families upon check-in.

We are looking for individuals willing to assist in our non-traditional shelter operations as needed.  Non-traditional shelters may be warming stations/shelters, cooling stations/shelter, and Safer Places (State of Alabama designated sites for severe weather).  Interested volunteers would work under a shelter manager and will assist with any needs that may arise (set up, registration, food service, site supervision, volunteer coordination, etc).   Hours would be flexible and would likely include overnight shifts.

Shelter occupants would include unhoused individuals, persons without adequate heating/air conditioning, persons medically and other vulnerable populations.

Participants would need their own transportation, a valid driver'ss license, and potentially pass a background check as the need involves serving vulnerable populations (including children) and multiple sites in Mobile County and may include some virtual activities.

Caravita is a retirement community for active seniors seeking a more rewarding and simpler lifestyle.

A Certified Recreation Specialist is on staff to oversee engaging and exciting activities such as water aerobics, bingo and more. Volunteers are always welcome to assist personnel with the planning and coordination of these events.

Make plans to spend some time at Caravita and help keep these residents YOUNG at heart!

Reality and Truth Ministries provides the amenities of home to the homeless and needy in downtown Montgomery. This organization offers Bible study, showers, financial management, daily dinner and more to those in need. Through their Clothes Closet, clients are able to choose needed items for free at the store. 

Volunteer assistance is needed at the Clothes Closet and Daily Dinner Monday through Friday from 4:00pm until 6:00pm to help with sorting and organizing donations, assisting clients as they shop and serving dinner. Do you enjoy quiet, focused tasks that make a big impact behind the scenes? We're looking for a detail-oriented volunteer to help us enter registrations for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a program that delivers free books to children from birth to age five, right here in our community.

What You’ll Do: Twice a month, you'll spend a few hours entering new child registrations into our online system. It may not be glamorous, but your work ensures local children receive a brand-new, age-appropriate book in the mail each month—often the very first books they’ll ever own.

Why It Matters: Early exposure to books is one of the strongest predictors of a child’s future academic success. By volunteering your time, you’ll help foster a lifelong love of reading and learning for hundreds of children across Southwest Alabama.

Hurricane season is here. Help Red Cross help the community! Become a trained shelter volunteer now in preparation of opening/staffing the next needed local shelter. All disaster training is free.  

Hunger is a real problem; you can work to end it by volunteering as a Food Sorting Volunteer with Feeding the Gulf Coast! 

Feeding the Gulf Coast seeks Food Sorting Volunteers to help inspect and sort food donations, preparing them for distribution to those in need. This includes checking expiration dates, making sure cans are not rusty or missing labels, and boxing similar items together to put on our shelves for our partner organizations to stock their pantries. This project requires you to engage in light to moderate physical activity.

The group needs volunteers to assist with trapping and transporting feral cats to Montgomery Humane Society or Alabama Animal Alliance for spay/neuter and then returning the cats to their colony. Education will be provided and traps can be purchased or rented through Alabama Animal Alliance.

Mobile County EMA is looking for individuals in the Mobile, AL area who are willing to help our agency in assisting the citizens of Mobile.  Activities will be varied and require various physical activities and abilities.  It may be answering phones, loading water and food into vehicles, working in our warehouse or a donated goods warehouse, and managing various volunteer operations and many more possibilities.

Persons interested would be encouraged to participate in trainings and exercises to achieve a basic level of competency in emergency management practices and tactics.  Trainings would be free of charge and would be virtual and in-person.  A simple application and liability release are required.  Hours are flexible and would primarily be M-F, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM in Blue Skies (Day-to-Day) and in Grey Skies (Hazzard/Disaster times) it would be 4, 6, 8, and 12 hour shifts based on need and your willingness to participate.

A Guardianship is a legal relationship in which a Guardian is appointed by Mobile County Probate Court to make decisions for those incapacitated or unable to communicate decisions concerning their health or safety. The guardian does not handle any financial responsibilities. A Conservator is appointed by the court to handle these matters.

The Volunteer Guardian Program (VGP) is the last line of defense for vulnerable citizens - with no appropriate family or friends - against homelessness and worsening quality of life.  The VGP is administered by the Via Health, Fitness and Enrichment Center, and partners with the Mobile County Probate Court, the Mobile County Commission, the City of Mobile and community referral agencies.  Mobile County’s VGP was introduced by Probate Court Judge Don Davis in 2010, and the program remains the first and only of its kind in our state. 

The life-changing decisions Volunteer Guardians make for their wards impact basic needs (food and housing), medical treatments or care and end-of-life care.  Guardians attend court hearings, file paperwork, coordinate with other agencies to obtain needed services, shop or take  their ward shopping,  attend doctors’ appointments if needed and stay connected to ensure wards’ health and safety.

Since 2010, VGP has recruited, trained and matched hundreds of community volunteers to serve as Guardians for these special people. Currently, there are more than 65 amazing Volunteer Guardians active in the program.  They range in age from 21 to 65, and include college students, homemakers, nurses, pastors and preachers, Certified Nursing Assistants, social workers and even a retired FBI official.

We know that natural disasters happen, and it's not a matter of if they'll happen, but when they'll happen. And when they do happen, volunteers are needed in a hurry.

We are in need of dining room volunteers to assist in serving our elderly Residents breakfast and aid in clearing tables afterward. Meals in our dining room are served restaurant style. Breakfast is from 7:45 a.m. - 9 a.m. As a dining room volunteer, you'll enjoy getting to know our wonderful Residents while helping them in a meaningful way.

Are you looking to make a difference for a local homeowner? Rebuilding Together of South Alabama (RTSOAL) is looking for volunteers or groups to assistance with service days. Tasks may include painting, cleaning, lawn maintenance, gardening or planting flowers at an upcoming community revitalization project.

Projects are scheduled on an "as-needed" basis and typically occur in spring, fall, and winter.

Caseworker Family Contact - Enter data from newly enlisted service members to ensure that their loved ones can be informed of our services. Work can be done remotely from home or from the Red Cross office.

Operational Shelter Trainee - Assist with opening and staffing an emergency shelter during a disaster.

Operational Health Services Volunteer - Support the affected community in a variety of settings by providing health and functional needs assessments, illness and injury surveillance, replacing lost medications and medical equipment and condolence support.

Duty Officer - Play an important role when Red Cross provides aid to those affected by disasters. They are the first and single point of contact from emergency service organizations when the request for assistance is made.

Volunteer Recognition & Appreciation - Plan and celebrate achievements, encourage fellow volunteers in their work. This virtual position is perfect for someone who likes to work behind the scenes.

This position supports the Regional Volunteer Services department. This is a hybrid position that will require some in-person activities, but the majority will be virtual. The Volunteer Services Engagement Team Member assists in recognizing, thanking, and celebrating volunteers for their impact and contributions to the Red Cross. Assist with planning a implementing appreciation events, like holiday parties. Support Department Recognition and Appreciation activities to ensure recognition is carried out by all lines of service within the Region.

Do you have an active license or certification for RN, LPN/LVN, MD, DO, EMT, PA or Paramedic? If so, the Red Cross needs your help! Volunteers are needed to provide hands on care for shelter clients to include assistance with activities of daily living, wound care, incontinence care and assistance with functional needs. Additionally, participants will provide health education and assessments, replace medications, advocate for client needs and support maternal and child needs.

Volunteers must make a 2 week commitment, be at least 18 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license and be willing and able to volunteer in person at a disaster shelter before, during or after a disaster event.

We are looking for volunteers who want to tutor students between the ages of 8 and 18 in an after-school tutoring program.  The times for tutoring are Tuesday from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. and/or Thursday from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m., and we are looking for volunteers who will commit to at least a semester working with a small group of students.

Triage Assistant Internships/Volunteers

Escort patients to and from the lobby area. Take vitals, complete medical history forms & update medical chart, etc. Determine the reason for the visit and prepare the patient to see the Doctor. Other duties include cleaning patients' rooms, stocking them, and preparing them for the next patient. Assist medical team as needed.

Triage volunteers work as a part of a team of 3 other triage assistants. Students' placement is based on their availability to volunteer 7:30 am - 12 pm or 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm and open shifts. (Commitment: One 4-hour shift once per week for the entire semester)

Shift PM 1:00 - 5:00 pm Monday - Thursday

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer, deciding what’s next can be overwhelming. ACS CARES™ (Community Access to Resources, Education, and Support) is a multi-channel program designed to provide non-clinical navigation support to cancer patients and caregivers. Through in-person student volunteers and virtual community volunteers, CARES volunteers equip those facing cancer with curated content, programs, and services to fit their specific cancer journey.

College/graduate students volunteer at USA Mitchell Cancer Institute to provide people with cancer and caregivers with empathetic, culturally sensitive and inclusive non-clinical navigation support throughout the cancer journey.

We are in need of donations of homemade candy or prepackaged candy. These items will be sold at our annual Lawn party on October 20th. The Little Sisters of the Poor is a nursing home that serves the elderly poor in Mobile.

All doantions can be dropped off at our reception desk the week of October 14th.

Individuals with developmental disabilities typically LOVE music, and music therapy is so important to their well being. Are you a future teacher, college student or high school student who has a love for History, Astronomy, Zoology, Foreign Languages, Art, Drama, etc.? Do you love to share your knowledge or interests with others perhaps in a small classroom type setting? We have several residents at Mulherin Home who LOVE to learn! We are looking for volunteers to teach classes on various subjects. These are adults with special needs so there is no grading, just learning! Get volunteer hours while talking about your favorite subjects! Classes can be anywhere from 30 mins to over an hour, and can repeat or be a one time "workshop." 

You do not have to be a student to volunteer, and you do not have to be a professional in whatever subject you want to teach. You will have access to a large screen TV if you need to cast photos or videos. Most of them can not read, but they remember and love showing off what they have learned!

We accept volunteers seven days a week 9am to 5:30pm.

We have approximately 10-15 residents who are ready for classes to start!

This is an excellent way to earn a letter of recommendation for college admission or for a job!

We are always on the lookout for volunteers. We welcome any age as long as children are accompanied by an adult. We have 30 residents with a wide range of abilities. You can be paired with an individual or a small group with similar abilities for a larger activity. We accept volunteers seven days a week from 9am to 5:30pm. We are seeking volunteers (and work-study students) to help with after-school tutoring and enrichment at Mobile County Training School. Tutoring takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 pm to 4:00pm. This program features interactive games, a fun curriculum, and free fields that tutors are also invited to attend. Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Alabama (BBBSSA) is the largest one-to-one mentoring organization in south Alabama serving over 600 children and a minimum of 1,800 people annually across four counties. Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. We enlist adult volunteer, “Bigs”, and match them with “Littles”, who are children between the ages of 6-12 and would benefit the most from having a Big. The purpose of our services is to give children a caring and supportive adult mentor, who’s been thoroughly screened and trained, that will guide them to success, hold them accountable, and help them reach their full potential.

 Our School-based Mentoring program is in 41 schools (31 in Mobile County) and we currently have 39 local Corporate Partners, including The University of South Alabama, who allow their employees one hour a week to visit their Littles at school through our School-based Mentoring Program. School-based mentoring takes place on school grounds during school hours. Matches are encouraged to talk about academics, aspirations, and just have fun. It’s really all about friendship, guidance and building a relationship. A Match Specialist is assigned to each match and stays in contact with the Big, Little, school, and guardian through the entire relationship. Big Brothers Big Sisters is always there for Bigs; it’s a partnership.

BBBS is America’s most impactful volunteer experience because our services provide a tangible way to change a life. Here in South Alabama, our 2019- 2020 Program Outcome Evaluation Metrics revealed 98% of Littles maintained or improved academic performance; 99% of Littles maintained or improved upon social competence levels; 98% of Littles maintained or improved academically; 99%  of Littles reported having a very important adult in their lives.  These results galvanize our relentless commitment to fighting for the children of Baldwin, Escambia, Mobile and Monroe Counties.

We are not saviors or heroes. Instead, we create and professionally support meaningful match relationships to help children ignite and harness their own potential—the potential they have had all along. And Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the country have been doing just that for 120 years; locally we’ve been serving families for over 20 years. We clear a path to a child’s biggest possible future in partnership with the child’s parent/guardian and Big. The enrollment process begins when you meet with one of our Match Specialists to complete the application paperwork, background forms, and interview.  Once the paperwork is complete, we begin the background and reference checks that usually take 4-6 weeks to get back.  While we wait, you will need to take our online volunteer training.  Once the background and reference checks are complete, you will attend a volunteer orientation and ask any follow-up questions if needed. During the process, we will identify a Little for you.  When all of the following steps are complete, we will schedule a Match Meeting to introduce you to your new Little.  Big Brothers Big Sisters reserves the right to accept or deny participants, or close a match at any time.  

YOU CAN DO THIS!

Mentoring only requires that you be yourself.  Who could imagine that helping out with a Little's homework or playing a game of catch could reap such rewards?  You already demonstrate that you possess all the fundamental skills and abilities to be a successful mentor by your willingness to be there. Mentoring is about sharing your personal time.  It's not about money, gifts, or events. Mentoring is often as uncomplicated as engaging in what appears ordinary to most of us...helping a child with homework, playing games, talking, listening, letting a child run errands with you.  But to a child without a role model, these are extraordinary activities. The moment you become a mentor to a child, your experience is a success.  For these kids, your willingness to spend time with them is the most powerful act of all.

Mobile Japanese Garden is a public place with 16 acres of natural gardens and trails, and we need your help beautifying the space during the week and on the weekend. Help us get the garden ready for pictures and school field trips.

Schedule anytime around your studies and work schedules. You pick your volunteer hours. Then contact us with particular dates and times that work with your schedule. Don is here almost every day to assist, and we'll work together as a team.

Thanks for Volunteering at the Japanese Garden!

Our veteran patients that are currently on Hospice enjoy the camaraderie and the bond that only those with military histories share and pay tribute to others who have served our county. Here at Springhill Hospice we like to honor our veterans year round. These volunteers may provide social visits and share memories together and provide a listening ear to someone who understands. These volunteers may also document veterans military stories through the veterans history project. We also do a pinning ceremony for our veterans closer to Veterans Day and we like our veteran volunteers to take part in these ceremonies as well. If you would like to provide a lasting impact on our veterans patients and loved ones, please consider joining us!

Volunteers are requested to assist our Activity Department in providing manicures to residents. This includes taking off nail polish, clipping nails, and painting nails. Volunteers are needed on Tuesdays at 10:00am and 2pm.

Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy needs assistance with social media marketing and production of a new promotional video featuring our facility, and the importance of our free medication safety net benefitting more than 1464 uninsured patients living in Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia and Washington counties. The video will also feature testimonials from patients, volunteers, and donors about how supporting Alabama's ONLY licensed charitable pharmacy significantly impacts the lives and productivity of the working poor, homeless individuals, and senior citizens in our service areas. A social media recording kit and Apple computer tablets are available on site. This intern will work with the Marketing and Development Manager.

Are you a CleanTok junkie? Do you get giddy over organized spaces? We are seeking dedicated volunteers just like you to assist with resetting rooms at our emergency family shelter. The sooner rooms are cleaned, the sooner another family in need can be offered the safety of shelter. Move-outs occur at various times so some flexibility is a plus. Individuals are welcome, but this is also a great activity for groups of 2-3. Your key responsibilities will be:

Friendly Callers Needed!

At First Light Community of Mobile, we have six houses for our core members to live in. Because we put so much time into taking care of our core members and providing them the best life possible, we don't always have time to take care of the exterior of our houses. We are looking for volunteers to help with gardening and landscaping at our different properties to help maintain the integrity of our homes. 

You can help local children get FREE books to read in their homes!  

Goodwill Gulf Coast has hundreds of books at 7431 Airport Blvd, Mobile, AL 36617, (in the Community Center) and they need to be sorted for quality so children can take them home to read and enjoy!  You, your children, co-workers or community group can make a big difference in just 2 hours of time.

What is better than getting out of jail free?  Getting out of jail with a GED!!!  Our tutoring program inside the Metro Jail is helping people go to work at good jobs when they get out, and keep from coming back. Your tutoring and admin skills can help WOMEN get into the program, study the right things, and pass the test!  We especially need a woman (or two!) who can help keep testing and paperwork up to date as well as teach reading and writing skills.

Supporters of the Mobile SPCA donate aluminum cans to us that we recycle for funds to help our mission. We need one or two people at a time to come by to crush cans and then bag them up. We have the can crushing equipment and a spot in the warehouse with a big fan. Please come by to crush cans anytime we are open. Donate whatever time you can.

Would you like to help military families learn coping skills such as communicating clearly or how to deal with stress?  Join our team! Facilitators for Red Cross Re-connection Workshops provide essential tools to service member, veterans and their families across Alabama, all while receiving free/expense paid training and free CE Credits.

This position supports the Regional Service to the Armed Forces department and provides Reconnection Workshop modules to military, veterans and their families in various community-based settings.

Become a Blood Donor Ambassador!

Your openhearted attitude creates ongoing donor support.  Through your personal encouragement to those giving blood, the Red Cross is able to give someone another smile, another hug, another chance through the gift of blood. 

Blood Donor Ambassadors provide excellent customer service to enhance the blood donor experience in several ways:

*  Welcome-- help donors check-in and inform on how to maximize their donation;

*  Assist Collections Team members by sanitizing and disinfecting (wear gloves when using cleaning agents); 

*  Support donors in hospitality area to provide re-hydration, check time in canteen area and monitor the donor for possible adverse reactions;

*  Assist Donor Recruiting by calling donors who have not arrived for their appointment or whose appointment needs to be rescheduled or cancelled.

Be a meaningful part of a larger mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering. Training is free, but the hope you provide is priceless.

Red Cross needs reliable volunteers to serve as Transportation Specialists (TS) for Blood Services. TS volunteers distribute blood and blood products to area hospitals in and around Mobile, Biloxi and Pensacola utilizing a Red Cross minivan. Morning and afternoon shifts are available. (There is also a need for drivers to be on standby.)

Welcome donors to blood drives and provide friendly support before and after they give. This can include helping donors to register, answering their questions and assisting them at the refreshments table.

Schedules rarely change and are available several months in advance. Weekly shifts are highly encouraged (for example – one shift every Tuesday morning or afternoon). Note: Blood drives (and volunteer needs) are usually during business hours on weekdays.

Disaster Action Team members:

* Provide 24-hour immediate support and assistance to individuals and families who have been impacted by a home fire or other local disaster;

* Work as part of an assigned team to respond to local disasters within two hours;

* Work with the on-scene lead to assess whether additional resources/support are required and communicate those needs to leadership;

* Attend regularly scheduled team meetings.

“There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers for themselves.”

AARP is seeking volunteers to serve as  Prepare to Care volunteers who will conduct virtual and in-person workshops to help people plan for the role of family caregiver. Volunteers use prepared presentations to help people make a plan for caring for someone:

Volunteers may also help schedule presentations. The presentation is casual, informative and supportive and lasts from 15 minutes to about an hour depending on the group needs. Some AARP Caregiving volunteers choose to also participate in advocacy efforts to strengthen caregiving support.
