We are in need of donations of homemade candy or prepackaged candy. These items will be sold at our annual Lawn party on October 20th. The Little Sisters of the Poor is a nursing home that serves the elderly poor in Mobile.

All doantions can be dropped off at our reception desk the week of October 14th.

Support services for Mobile seniors by volunteering at Via! Health, Fitness and Enrichment. We have lots of different projects we need help with, including clerical and administrative tasks, gardening/weeding flower beds, lawn care, supply sorting and organization, facilities clean-up, and other special projects. 

Volunteers are always welcome, and we're happy to set up a time for you to volunteer that works around your schedule. 

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS:

Volunteering to provide office help, which includes customer service, data entry, office cleanup, clothes sorting and organizing, can be a valuable way to contribute to an organization or cause you care about. The scope of work will involve the removal of trash and debris from indoor areas of the building. This includes but is not limited to disposing of debris, discarded items, and other waste materials. Mulherin Home is looking for musicians of all experience levels to volunteer their time and play for our clients. Individuals with developmental disabilities typically LOVE music, and music therapy is so important to their well being. If you are a musician and would like to come to our home and play for our clients, please email jamie@mulherinhome.com. 

We have indoor & covered outdoor spaces perfect for set up. Our clients love ALL types of music, from Blue Grass to Jazz, Classical, Rock, Folk, Gospel, Dance & Hip Hop and everything in between. Are you a future teacher, college student or high school student who has a love for History, Astronomy, Zoology, Foreign Languages, Art, Drama, etc.? Do you love to share your knowledge or interests with others perhaps in a small classroom type setting? We have several residents at Mulherin Home who LOVE to learn! We are looking for volunteers to teach classes on various subjects. These are adults with special needs so there is no grading, just learning! Get volunteer hours while talking about your favorite subjects! Classes can be anywhere from 30 mins to over an hour, and can repeat or be a one time "workshop." 

You do not have to be a student to volunteer, and you do not have to be a professional in whatever subject you want to teach. You will have access to a large screen TV if you need to cast photos or videos. Most of them can not read, but they remember and love showing off what they have learned!

We accept volunteers seven days a week 9am to 5:30pm.

We have approximately 10-15 residents who are ready for classes to start!

This is an excellent way to earn a letter of recommendation for college admission or for a job!

We are always on the lookout for volunteers. We welcome any age as long as children are accompanied by an adult. We have 30 residents with a wide range of abilities. You can be paired with an individual or a small group with similar abilities for a larger activity. We accept volunteers seven days a week from 9am to 5:30pm. The following is a list of a few of their favorite activities. Come have fun at Mulherin!

We are looking for weekly volunteers who would like to help put clean sheets and blankets on our Residents' beds on Wednesday mornings from 8:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. A training will be provided, and we ask that volunteers commit to helping weekly or every other week.

We are seeking volunteers (and work-study students) to help with after-school tutoring at Phillip’s Prep. Tutoring takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 pm to 4:30pm. For more information, respond to this need, and we will be in touch with the next steps!

We are seeking volunteers (and work-study students) to help with after-school tutoring and enrichment at Mobile County Training School. Tutoring takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 pm to 4:00pm. This program features interactive games, a fun curriculum, and free fields that tutors are also invited to attend. Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Alabama (BBBSSA) is the largest one-to-one mentoring organization in south Alabama serving over 600 children and a minimum of 1,800 people annually across four counties. Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. We enlist adult volunteer, “Bigs”, and match them with “Littles”, who are children between the ages of 6-12 and would benefit the most from having a Big. The purpose of our services is to give children a caring and supportive adult mentor, who’s been thoroughly screened and trained, that will guide them to success, hold them accountable, and help them reach their full potential.

 Our School-based Mentoring program is in 41 schools (31 in Mobile County) and we currently have 39 local Corporate Partners, including The University of South Alabama, who allow their employees one hour a week to visit their Littles at school through our School-based Mentoring Program. School-based mentoring takes place on school grounds during school hours. Matches are encouraged to talk about academics, aspirations, and just have fun. It’s really all about friendship, guidance and building a relationship. A Match Specialist is assigned to each match and stays in contact with the Big, Little, school, and guardian through the entire relationship. Big Brothers Big Sisters is always there for Bigs; it’s a partnership.

BBBS is America’s most impactful volunteer experience because our services provide a tangible way to change a life. Here in South Alabama, our 2019- 2020 Program Outcome Evaluation Metrics revealed 98% of Littles maintained or improved academic performance; 99% of Littles maintained or improved upon social competence levels; 98% of Littles maintained or improved academically; 99%  of Littles reported having a very important adult in their lives.  These results galvanize our relentless commitment to fighting for the children of Baldwin, Escambia, Mobile and Monroe Counties.

We are not saviors or heroes. Instead, we create and professionally support meaningful match relationships to help children ignite and harness their own potential—the potential they have had all along. And Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the country have been doing just that for 120 years; locally we’ve been serving families for over 20 years. We clear a path to a child’s biggest possible future in partnership with the child’s parent/guardian and Big. Big Brothers Big Sisters regularly keep a waiting list of children and schools requesting their services.  Enrollment Process

The enrollment process begins when you meet with one of our Match Specialists to complete the application paperwork, background forms, and interview.  Once the paperwork is complete, we begin the background and reference checks that usually take 4-6 weeks to get back.  While we wait, you will need to take our online volunteer training.  Once the background and reference checks are complete, you will attend a volunteer orientation and ask any follow-up questions if needed. During the process, we will identify a Little for you.  When all of the following steps are complete, we will schedule a Match Meeting to introduce you to your new Little.  Big Brothers Big Sisters reserves the right to accept or deny participants, or close a match at any time.  

YOU CAN DO THIS!

Mentoring only requires that you be yourself.  Who could imagine that helping out with a Little's homework or playing a game of catch could reap such rewards?  You already demonstrate that you possess all the fundamental skills and abilities to be a successful mentor by your willingness to be there. Mentoring is about sharing your personal time.  It's not about money, gifts, or events. Mentoring is often as uncomplicated as engaging in what appears ordinary to most of us...helping a child with homework, playing games, talking, listening, letting a child run errands with you.  But to a child without a role model, these are extraordinary activities. The moment you become a mentor to a child, your experience is a success.  For these kids, your willingness to spend time with them is the most powerful act of all.

Our veteran patients that are currently on Hospice enjoy the camaraderie and the bond that only those with military histories share and pay tribute to others who have served our county. Here at Springhill Hospice we like to honor our veterans year round. These volunteers may provide social visits and share memories together and provide a listening ear to someone who understands. These volunteers may also document veterans military stories through the veterans history project. We also do a pinning ceremony for our veterans closer to Veterans Day and we like our veteran volunteers to take part in these ceremonies as well. If you would like to provide a lasting impact on our veterans patients and loved ones, please consider joining us!

Volunteers are requested to assist our Activity Department in providing manicures to residents. This includes taking off nail polish, clipping nails, and painting nails. Volunteers are needed on Tuesdays at 10:00am and 2pm.

We are looking for volunteers to assist our activity department at outings for lunch and shopping. We have one this Friday at 11:45am to Blue Gill. Other events are trips to Walmart, Dollar Tree, etc. You would accompany our Activity Department and assist a resident during the outing. This volunteer would need to schedule an orientation to be a volunteer at the Little Sisters of the Poor. Please respond to this need if you would be interested in helping this week or to be notified about future outings for our residents.

We are looking for volunteers to assist residents at Bingo. We have Bingo every Thursday at 2:30pm (women) and 10:00am on Friday (men). We would love to have you join us!

Play a lead role in the scheduling, utilization, maintenance and documentation, of American Red Cross vehicles to ensure the organization has a fully operational and deployable fleet.

Qualifications:

§  Maintain a valid driver's license from the state in which they reside

§  Qualified MVR (motor vehicle record)

§  Knowledge of DOT (Dept. of Transportation) a plus, but not required

§  Communication and interpersonal skills

§  The ability to assist with fleet coordination using logistical organizational skills.

§  Attention to detail and adherence to deadlines

§  Knowledge of vehicles and light mechanics preferred

Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy needs assistance with social media marketing and production of a new promotional video featuring our facility, and the importance of our free medication safety net benefitting more than 1464 uninsured patients living in Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia and Washington counties. The video will also feature testimonials from patients, volunteers, and donors about how supporting Alabama's ONLY licensed charitable pharmacy significantly impacts the lives and productivity of the working poor, homeless individuals, and senior citizens in our service areas. A social media recording kit and Apple computer tablets are available on site. This intern will work with the Marketing and Development Manager.

Are you a CleanTok junkie? Do you get giddy over organized spaces? We are seeking dedicated volunteers just like you to assist with resetting rooms at our emergency family shelter. The sooner rooms are cleaned, the sooner another family in need can be offered the safety of shelter. Move-outs occur at various times so some flexibility is a plus. Individuals are welcome, but this is also a great activity for groups of 2-3. Your key responsibilities will be:

Friendly Callers Needed!  

Through our Circle of Friends program, volunteers will provide companionship and social contact to older adults via weekly phone calls.  Our goal is to make sure that isolated seniors have someone to talk to so that no senior is alone!  These once per week calls are impactful to our area seniors and we need you!  This is a great small group or student service project.  This program is also a way of reinforcing your soft skills to prepare for any career or public service opportunity.  Call today to find out more about Circle of Friends!

At First Light Community of Mobile, we have six houses for our core members to live in. Because we put so much time into taking care of our core members and providing them the best life possible, we don't always have time to take care of the exterior of our houses. We are looking for volunteers to help with gardening and landscaping at our different properties to help maintain the integrity of our homes. 

Supporters of the Mobile SPCA donate aluminum cans to us that we recycle for funds to help our mission. We need one or two people at a time to come by to crush cans and then bag them up. We have the can crushing equipment and a spot in the warehouse with a big fan. Please come by to crush cans anytime we are open. Donate whatever time you can.

Your openhearted attitude creates ongoing donor support.  Through your personal encouragement to those giving blood, the Red Cross is able to give someone another smile, another hug, another chance through the gift of blood. 

Blood Donor Ambassadors provide excellent customer service to enhance the blood donor experience in several ways:

*  Welcome-- help donors check-in and inform on how to maximize their donation;

*  Assist Collections Team members by sanitizing and disinfecting (wear gloves when using cleaning agents); 

*  Support donors in hospitality area to provide re-hydration, check time in canteen area and monitor the donor for possible adverse reactions;

*  Assist Donor Recruiting by calling donors who have not arrived for their appointment or whose appointment needs to be rescheduled or cancelled.

Red Cross needs reliable volunteers to serve as Transportation Specialists (TS) for Blood Services. TS volunteers distribute blood and blood products to area hospitals in and around Mobile, Biloxi and Pensacola utilizing a Red Cross minivan. Morning and afternoon shifts are available. AARP is seeking volunteers to serve as  Prepare to Care volunteers who will conduct virtual and in-person workshops to help people plan for the role of family caregiver. Volunteers use prepared presentations to help people make a plan for caring for someone:

Volunteers may also help schedule presentations. The presentation is casual, informative and supportive and lasts from 15 minutes to about an hour depending on the group needs. Some AARP Caregiving volunteers choose to also participate in advocacy efforts to strengthen caregiving support.

We need 4 or 5 guys to help move our transitional housing clients from time to time. They are not big moves. Sometimes we need a washer and dryer moved to another apartment or a chest of drawers. We also need some one that has a truck to haul the items from one apartment to another. It wouldn't be a far drive. Usually, it's within the same apartment complex. Heavy furniture and pickup weight of over 20 ponds is necessary.

We are looking for volunteers 16 and up who can drive themselves to our shelter to take care of our children while their parent is in group counseling or parenting classes. The volunteer must be able to drive themselves here since it is in a secret location. The volunteer must also fill out a volunteer application and come in to do an orientation that lasts approximately 30 minutes. For any one 18 and older a background clearance is done during orientation.

The Dumas Wesley Community Center's transitional housing program, the Baldwin Family Village (BFV), is located in Fairhope, Alabama. The program provides 12 months of housing stability and wrap-around services for up to 100 women and children annually. BFV seeks to break the cycle of homelessness and help women and children re-establish and maintain self-sufficiency by focusing on accountability, case management, life skills and behavior modification.

Volunteers are needed to become meal sponsors to provide a dinner for single women and women with children experiencing homelessness. Meal sponsors can sign up for one day or multiple days throughout the year.

Meal Sponsor Information
1. Sign up to donate a meal here.
2. Plan to bring a meal that will feed 25-30 people (women and children)
3. Please note your menu items on the meal site in order to avoid duplicate meals during the week
4. We ask that you consider providing a well-rounded meal consisting of a protein, vegetable or fruit, and a starch

6. You are welcome to bring disposable plates and utensils
7. Meals must be prepared and fully cooked offsite

The Rosa Parks Museum is a state-of-the-art facility depicting events that started the bus boycott and early Civil Rights movement and provides an interactive, multi-media presentation to bring history to life.

TOUR GUIDE FOR THE DORA FRANKLIN FINLEY AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE TRAIL

We are searching for part-time tour guides (9 - 12 hours/week) for the Dora Franklin Finley African-American Heritage Trail.(DFFAAHT)  The tour guide’s responsibilities include familiarizing customers with local historic sites on the DFFAAHT, and new attractions. These tours are by vehicle (step on tour) and some walking tours. The tour guide will ensure the safety of the groups. The guide should be an excellent storyteller and give excellent customer service. Training and scripts will be provided by DFFAAHT.

Over the past two decades, computer use among older adults has doubled, and 67 percent of seniors are now using the internet according to the Pew Research Center. Despite the growing trend towards a more computer-savvy population, however, many older adults fall behind younger generations when it comes to technology adoption. Family Guidance Center of Alabama is looking for a computer instructor who will teach the basics like how to use a mouse, save files, introduction to Microsoft products, checking and sending emails and Zoom. Ideally, those participating will be available to serve 2 - 3 times weekly.

After driving, walking is the most popular mode of transportation in the United States. However, in many towns, cities and neighborhoods, the only way to get around is by car because walking is just too dangerous. 

AARP Alabama walk audits can help individuals, groups and local leaders assess the walkability of the sidewalks and streets in their neighborhoods, downtown and other locations.

AARP Alabama provides tools and training for individuals of all ages and abilities to conduct walk audits. The organization is currently seeking a team of volunteers interested in conducting walk audits in Montgomery. The audits can generate vital information useful to the city. 

If you're interested in joining a new walk-audit team of volunteers, this opportunity is for you! Walk audits usually take about an hour for the audit, more or less depending on the location, and another hour or more for a final summary session. Walk audit leaders may also assist by creating a report summarizing the findings.  

The Montgomery Area Council On Aging feeds not only seniors but also their PETS! Area youth age 14 and older are invited to spend some time at the center helping bag the pet food in preparation for distribution to MACOA's clients. Those who wish to participate are also more than welcome to pick up the pet food and supplies from the agency and bag at home.

The Family Guidance Center needs your help serving as a Head Start Classroom Volunteer! Head Start is a federal program for preschool children, newborn to age 5, from low-income families. Current and prior Head Start parents and members of the community are welcome. Participants will assist with children's activities, classroom duties, light office help and more.

Please note that a background check and medical clearance are both required as well as a minimum of 4 volunteer hours per day.  Volunteers are needed in Prattville, Millbrook and Wetumpka.

The Family Guidance Center of Alabama is in need of an office volunteer every Monday - Friday with negotiable hours for a minimum of 10 hours weekly.  This is a wonderful opportunity to assist an organization committed to serving individuals and families. See below for all the details.

We have partnered with Goodwill Gulf Coast to share gently used books with students and community members. we ask volunteers to place labels inside of books prior to community events. Volunteers will be expected to peel labels and place labels inside of books. Each opportunity will provide volunteers with 100-400 books to prep. This opportunity is great for a small group 3-5, during business hours Monday-Thursday 8a.m.-4 p.m. This opportunity is available at the Clarke County and Mobile locations.

United Way needs assistance weeding, cutting patch of grass, and picking up trash at parking lot located in downtown Mobile. This opportunity would ideally occur after business hours or on the weekend.

Because of timing of work, volunteer would need to bring tools(weed eater, lawn mower, gloves, rake, garbage bags, hedge trimmers, wheelbarrow, etc)

Provide telephone contact, mailings, and visits to family members following the death of a loved one.  May help with adult support groups and/or Remembrance Ceremonies, and Camp Connect - a bereaved children's camp that is held annually.

Covenant Care is seeking active duty and veteran volunteers to support the We Honor Veterans program, a national program that honors hospice patients who are veterans. Volunteers assist with outreach and education for veterans helping them to access hospice care and visit veteran patients to present them with certificates and pins, thanking them for their service to our country.

Provide support to patients and families in homes, nursing homes, or ALF's. Support includes companionship, respite for caregivers (so they can run errands/go to appointments while you keep their loved one company), assisting with small tasks, running errands, etc. 

Note: Average support time is 1-3hrs, 4hrs max, but patient/family need may require 1x/mo - 4x/mo visits.  On occasion, there may be a patient/family that needs visits 2-3x/wk.  The volunteer match would be made based on volunteers' availability and preferences.  For example, if you're only available to volunteer on Wednesdays after 2pm we would match you with a patient/family that would not have a day/time preference or needs a volunteer for that day/time.  Sames goes with pet allergies and/or likes/dislikes: if you don't want to visit a patient/family that has pets, or if there's a smoker in the house, we would handle that accordingly.

Meals on Wheels is MACOA's flagship program. Every Monday through Friday, MACOA volunteers deliver hot, nutritious lunchtime meals to homebound seniors who are unable to prepare their own meals. This vital program is a source of much-needed nutrition, provides welcome daily contact with senior clients and serves as a means to regularly check recipients' welfare.

This organization's greatest need is volunteer Meals on Wheels drivers.  MACOA has made a commitment to their Meals on Wheels clients to deliver a hot meal to them every week day.  Food insecurity is a serious issue among 1 in 6 senior adults.  MACOA Meals on Wheels drivers help remedy this issue as well as provide a safety check and combat isolation – visiting clients each day.  A route consists of approximately 10-12 stops and would only take an hour or so to complete.

Each year, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society hosts a cycling fundraiser called Bike MS: Tour de Beach.  This event raises over $500,000 for programs, services, and research benefitting thousands of people in your region living with multiple sclerosis. Free event t-shirt, refreshments, and community service hours available.        

This year's event is scheduled for Friday September 16th,  Saturday September 17th and Sunday September 18th. We are in need of Volunteer Photographers to help capture the spirit, atmosphere and magic of this event. We have opportunities at the Start/Finish line, located at Gulf State Park.

The Elmore County Food Pantry always needs food staples like peanut butter, grits, oatmeal and cereal. If you would like to donate any of these items, you are welcome to drop off at their office at 515 West Boundary Street, Wetumpka.
