Meals on Wheels is MACOA's flagship program. Every Monday through Friday, MACOA volunteers deliver hot, nutritious lunchtime meals to homebound seniors who are unable to prepare their own meals. This vital program is a source of much-needed nutrition, provides welcome daily contact with senior clients and serves as a means to regularly check recipients' welfare.

This organization's greatest need is volunteer Meals on Wheels drivers.  MACOA has made a commitment to their Meals on Wheels clients to deliver a hot meal to them every week day.  Food insecurity is a serious issue among 1 in 6 senior adults.  MACOA Meals on Wheels drivers help remedy this issue as well as provide a safety check and combat isolation – visiting clients each day.  A route consists of approximately 10-12 stops and would only take an hour or so to complete.

Each year, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society hosts a cycling fundraiser called Bike MS: Tour de Beach.  This event raises over $500,000 for programs, services, and research benefitting thousands of people in your region living with multiple sclerosis. Free event t-shirt, refreshments, and community service hours available.        

This year's event is scheduled for Friday September 16th,  Saturday September 17th and Sunday September 18th. We are in need of Volunteer Photographers to help capture the spirit, atmosphere and magic of this event. We have opportunities at the Start/Finish line, located at Gulf State Park.

Springboard To Opportunities is in need of 6-10 Storytime for Sprouts assistants to help with our youth literacy program for the residents at Dauphin Gate apartment complex.  

Volunteers (6-10) can expect to come and assist with literacy prep (must wear mask and have Covid-19 Vaccination). 

The Storytime for Sprouts program is an ongoing literacy session every 1st Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. and is designed to promote literacy with the youth in the local community. This program will hold story time for the children within the community. Parents will receive books to take home for their children at the end of the session as well for the kids to read at home.

 Volunteers can expect to work in a group every first Monday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The activities will be inside, so you are asked to wear comfortable attire or themed if you choose for kids. Victory has a need for volunteers with a medical background (RN, MD, et. al.)

The Museum is looking for volunteers to dedicate 1 to 2 hours per month pulling up weeds in the Robert Thrower Medicinal Garden. The garden consists of three small beds bordering the front of the house. Hours can be flexible.

By becoming a Rape Crisis Volunteer, you can help by assisting victims of sexual assault within our community. Volunteers are trained to accompany victims at the hospital immediately following the assault, answer crisis calls, assist and participate in community events and fundraising opportunities.

Autism2Ability is searching for a volunteer to assist with software called Foundation Search.  This person has to be extremely well versed in running this program.  Tutorials are done with a person who works at Foundation Search and has solid capability in assisting Autism2Ability.  The support is very good for the person using this database.  The sole purpose of this work is to find those foundations who focus on what we can provide.  Such as Social and Human Services, Health and Education, all of which fit our business model.

Interview is important for both parties to understand the total scope of this vital work.  Times and days will be agreed upon within the framework of the interview and to be sure there is ample time for the completion of responsibility.

The ZooTeen program is designed for TEENS ages 13-17 years old that have an interest in animals and wildlife conservation. The Montgomery Zoo's Education Department is looking for teens who want to donate their time to the community and gain experience working with animals and the public. ZooTeens care for animals in the Zoo's education department and assist with animal presentations to school groups, community organizations and birthday parties. Examples of animals in the department are: chinchilla, three banded armadillo, tortoises, owls, hawks, snakes and small birds.

West Montgomery Action Committee will accept volunteers serving to fulfill a court ordered requirement for community service.

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Docent Volunteer Program is a year-long program within the Museum’s Education Department that prepares docents to present adult tours, school tours, studio activities, ARTWORKS presentations and outreach programs. Teaching credentials or artistic backgrounds are not required. Hospice of Montgomery volunteers are designed to play a vital role in the overall hospice program. Trained volunteers provide assistance with program administration as well as friendship and support to patients and families.

The residents include over 500 animals from five different continents all housed in natural, barrier-free habitats. We urgently need volunteers to help get our Habitat houses built! Volunteers are so important to us because they are the ones who build our houses, under the supervision of our construction crew. Women of Refined Gold is seeking a volunteer Case Manager for Women of Refined Gold's Safehaven Transitional Home. This home will provide up to 12 months of housing for single women who are homeless due to domestic violence. Renascence is a residential reentry center that helps non-violent men on probation or parole from the Alabama Department of Corrections make a successful transition to responsible living in a community. Many of the residents struggle to get to work or make appointments due to a lack of transportation. To alleviate this problem, Renascence is seeking 3 to 4 mature males to assist with transporting residents to appointments, services and/or work. Participants will be called upon on an "as needed" basis on weekdays between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.

The Autauga Creek Improvement Committee strives to provide a natural, scenic and educational recreation experience through ecological conservation and preservation of quality public access to the Autauga Creek Canoe Trail.

Volunteers are needed to assist with bank cleanup and trail construction. Please dress appropriately since you will be clearing brush and picking up trash along the creek banks and in the creek.

You will need to bring bug spray, garden or work gloves and wear sturdy shoes that can get wet. If you have a kayak or canoe, please bring them.

Highland Avenue Elementary is coordinating clean up sessions so the school will be tidy and welcoming to the students after their summer break. The school needs your help with painting hallways, cleaning out closets and moving furniture. Volunteers are needed to care for the Friends of the Mobile Animal Shelter's adoptable cats housed at the Petco Store in the new McGowin Park Shopping Center. Volunteer duties are to clean the cat cages, check on their food & water, clean their litter boxes and area surrounding the cages, check on cleanliness of bedding, etc. There are only four (4) cats housed at the store, so the process should only take about 1/2 an hour. Morning shift volunteers can go by the store between the hours of 8:00-10:30am. Evening and weekend help needed. Evening shift volunteers can go by the store between the hours of 5:00-9:00pm.  Thank you in advance for your consideration!

Dependable person needed to take cats and dogs to/from shelter to vet or foster homes, normally during weekday business hours. Crate and blankets/carriers/leashes can be provided.  

Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Alabama (BBBSSA) is the largest one-to-one mentoring organization in south Alabama serving over 600 children and a minimum of 1,800 people annually across four counties. Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. We enlist adult volunteer, “Bigs”, and match them with “Littles”, who are children between the ages of 6-12 and would benefit the most from having a Big. The purpose of our services is to give children a caring and supportive adult mentor, who’s been thoroughly screened and trained, that will guide them to success, hold them accountable, and help them reach their full potential.

 Our School-based Mentoring program is in 41 schools (31 in Mobile County) and we currently have 39 local Corporate Partners, including The University of South Alabama, who allow their employees one hour a week to visit their Littles at school through our School-based Mentoring Program. School-based mentoring takes place on school grounds during school hours. Matches are encouraged to talk about academics, aspirations, and just have fun. It’s really all about friendship, guidance and building a relationship. A Match Specialist is assigned to each match and stays in contact with the Big, Little, school, and guardian through the entire relationship. Big Brothers Big Sisters is always there for Bigs; it’s a partnership.

 BBBS is America’s most impactful volunteer experience because our services provide a tangible way to change a life. Here in South Alabama, our 2019-2020 Youth Outcomes shows 98% of Littles maintained or improved academic performance;  99% of Littles maintained or improved upon social competence levels; 98% of Littles maintained or improved academically; 99%  of Littles reported having a very important adult in their lives.

 Enrollment Process

The enrollment process begins when you meet with one of our Match Specialists to complete the application paperwork.  Once the paperwork is complete, we begin the background and reference checks that usually take 4-6 weeks to get back.  While we wait, you will need to take our online volunteer training or attend one of the scheduled training's at the office.  Once the background and reference checks are complete, you will attend a volunteer orientation and ask any follow-up questions if needed. During the process, we will identify a Little for you.  When all of the following steps are complete, we will schedule a Match Meeting to introduce you to your new Little.  Big Brothers Big Sisters reserves the right to accept or deny participants, or close a match at any time.  

YOU CAN DO THIS!

Mentoring only requires that you be yourself.  Who could imagine that helping out with a Little's homework or playing a game of catch could reap such rewards?  You already demonstrate that you possess all the fundamental skills and abilities to be a successful mentor by your willingness to be there. Mentoring is about sharing your personal time.  It's not about money, gifts, or events. Mentoring is often as uncomplicated as engaging in what appears ordinary to most of us...helping a child with homework, playing games, talking, listening, letting a child run errands with you.  But to a child without a role model, these are extraordinary activities. The moment you become a mentor to a child, your experience is a success.  For these kids, your willingness to spend time with them is the most powerful act of all.

Montgomery Food for Kids Backpack Program is seeking a social media intern to enhance their public awareness efforts and encourage volunteer participation. 

Each week, Food for Kids packs bags with kid friendly, nutritious, non-perishable food for Montgomery's hungry children. Bags are distributed anonymously to students prior to school dismissal on Friday afternoons to ensure participants won't go hungry over the weekend.

The Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail was established by Congress in November, 1966 to commemorate the three marches in 1965 from Selma to Montgomery.

Volunteers are needed to assist the regular professional park staff by helping with projects and assisting visitors. Volunteers perform a wide variety of jobs from maintaining trails to leading guided talks or tours. The time commitment for volunteer work varies from one-day projects to full-time work extending over months or years.

Both individuals and organized groups are welcome to volunteer. Individuals under 18 may volunteer with parental approval.

Second Chance needs volunteers to help tutor their youth in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science. Available days and times include Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon.

Over 60,000 Montgomery area residents are functionally illiterate, but the Capital Area Adult Literacy Council is working to combat this problem by bringing the power of literacy to their students FREE OF CHARGE.

Reach & Rise is a national YMCA program designed to build a better future for youth by helping them reach their full potential through the support of caring adults. Reach & Rise supports youth ages 6 to 17 who lack role models and are in communities challenged by poverty, crime and single-parent households among other social issues.

The National Park Service is seeking motivated volunteers to assist the staff at three separate sites: the Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail, Tuskegee Institute and Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Sites.

Head Start needs volunteers to man the reception area and provide clerical assistance one or two days each week. The days and times are completely flexible, and the agency is willing to work with your schedule. Duties would include answering the telephones, greeting visitors, routing calls and taking messages, general clerical services such as copying forms, assembling packets and light typing.

The 19th Judicial Circuit, which includes Autauga, Chilton, and Elmore counties, is seeking military veterans interested in becoming mentors to veterans participating in the Veterans Treatment Court program. DD-214  and background check are required as part of the application process.

Mentors may be assigned to a particular veteran or provide support across the board.  If assigned to a veteran, the mentor will be expected to provide support to the veteran until he or she graduates from the program, generally within a year.

Mentors stand with the participants during their court reviews and provide support and resources to the veterans to assist them in completing their program. Resource material and on the job training will be provided.

Meals On Wheels needs volunteers to help plate the food in preparation for delivery to their senior home bound clients.

Meals On Wheels is MACOA's popular flagship program. To older people who cannot prepare meals, this program is a blessing and provides them with a sense of security because of its personal contact.

One Place Family Justice Center, a one stop shop for victims of domestic violence, relies on volunteers to provide assistance in a variety of ways to ensure each day goes smoothly.

The Center is seeking Hospitality Volunteers to greet clients and guide them through the intake process.  Two shifts are available Monday through Friday: 8:00 am - 12:30 pm and 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm.

This ministry is in need of volunteers to assist them with a variety of tasks particularly administrative work and lunch preparation.

The Dallas County Family Resource Center was created in 2012 to serve as a central location to assess, assist and connect low income families and individuals in need with existing resources.

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF) is a fully professional regional theatre that produces around ten productions each season. ASF needs volunteers to assist in a variety of ways to keep things running smoothly.

Volunteer duties include but are not limited to directing and assisting patrons of the theatre, passing out programs, event set up and clean up and selling concessions. Come out and support one of our community's greatest assets!

Alabama Empowerment needs volunteer assistance with their after school tutoring program held Monday through Thursday from 3:30pm to 6:00pm.

If you have an afternoon or two to spare, consider spending that time with one of our community's youth to help them be better prepared and more successful in school.

Are you looking to be creative?  Do you enjoy social media?  The Boy Scouts of America/Scout Me In, could use your help. Let us know if you would like to help with one or more of the following: create a newsletter (We will provide all the info.  We just need someone to put it all together), Social Media posts (In all areas, including Facebook, Twitter, etc.), website updates and design, or create flyers for upcoming events. We also could use some help to build out our Giving Tuesday fundraising campaign.  Pick just one thing or several.  This is an ongoing need for us through out the year and any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

The Arc of Alabama is in need of someone to come to their office 2 or more times per week for general office assistance to include answering phones, data entry, sending emails, setting up for meetings and making copies.

United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) is forming teams of volunteers to help us on an ongoing basis with a number of tasks related to our various programs. We want to develop a group of volunteers whom we can call when different needs arise. We'll get to know you, learn your strengths and preferences, and invite you to come into the office during the work week as we need help with things you're good at and like doing. You wouldn't have to do all of the following, but the types of things for which we're seeking volunteers include:

Aide for Animals is a small, no-kill, non-profit  501c3 animal welfare organization, adoption center, assisted living and retirement home for healthy (non-contagious) domestic dogs and cats.  We are in need of mature, hard-working, and dependable volunteers to assist in maintaining our large cattery yard and general yard work.  Must have a genuine love and concern for animal welfare & enjoy interacting with dogs, cats, and other volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Looking for caring, self-directed flexible person, and have the ability to work with all kinds of people and situations.  Likes children and is able to relate to children of all ages.  The Victim Advocate Volunteer must be a responsible individual, who maintains the highest level of confidentiality. 

 Note: Most of the times trials start on a Monday and last more the one day.  We need only serious inquiries who have the time to be available for possibly mulitiple days from 8AM to 5PM. Also you should note that we keep a group of 10 vounteers at all times, therefore we do not need volunteers very often until someone decides they can no longer participate in the Volunteer Advocate Program any more.  If you are seriously interested and there are currently no openings your information will be kept on file until such time an opening becomes available.  There is an interview process to include a background check.

A program support volunteer will work one on one with persons experiencing homelessness in Mobile and Baldwin Counties.   Some of the volunteer needs are sorting and distributing mail, baggage check in, and lite maintenance.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact Sam Bradley at S.Bradley@hfal.org.

Historic Oakleigh is looking for volunteers interested in an indoor lobby position. We need volunteers to assist the daily lead docent in gift shop sales, answering phones, and welcoming guests. 

Our operating hours are 10am-3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tours are on the hour. Last tour is at 2pm.

If you are interested in helping lay mulch, paint, or powerwash, Historic Oakleigh is looking for volunteers looking to spend a work day on our grounds.
